Capturing the Essence of Place: How Location Shoots Elevate Interior Photography
There’s something undeniably special about a well-executed location shoot. Whether it’s a mountain retreat, a coastal hideaway, or a sophisticated urban loft, the setting itself tells a story. As an interior stylist, my role isn’t just about making spaces look beautiful—it’s about ensuring they feel lived-in, aspirational, and inviting.
For this particular project with Barbour Spangle Design, I worked closely with the architectural and design details they meticulously crafted to enhance the story of the space. My styling choices were made to complement the existing textures and color palette, ensuring every frame captured the depth and warmth of the design.
The Goal: A Portfolio-Worthy, Publishable Project
Every great interior shoot serves two purposes:
1) Elevating the designer’s portfolio – ensuring their work is presented in the best possible light
2) Creating editorial-ready imagery – increasing the chances of being featured in top publications
With this project, we set out to achieve both. Through thoughtful styling, photography and collaboration, we brought their vision to life in a way that not only showcased their talent but also made the space feel natural, effortless, and undeniably stunning on camera.

The Magic of a Location Shoot
Location shoots offer an authentic backdrop filled with character, natural light, and organic textures. Every setting has a unique personality that contributes to the overall composition of the image. When scouting a location for a brand, publication, or designer, I consider:
✔ Lighting: How natural and artificial light interacts with the space
✔ Architectural Features: Highlighting the most striking design elements
✔ Styling Needs: Layering in props, textiles, and decor to enhance the visual story
The Styling Process: Making Interiors Camera-Ready
The key to a successful shoot is preparation. Here’s a glimpse into my workflow:
Pre-Planning: Reviewing shot lists, prop selections, and design elements
On-Site Setup: Arranging furniture, accessories, and details for balanced compositions
Adjusting for the Lens: What looks good in person doesn’t always translate on camera—small tweaks make a big difference
Final Touches: Fluffing pillows, adjusting florals, and ensuring every corner is picture-perfect
