How to Use a Kitchen Renovation to Increase Your Storage Space.

Cluttered cabinets? Stacks of Tupperware toppling over? Spices in disarray and difficult to find? Don’t fret, the solution is as simple as a basic renovation or refresh of your existing space. While it may seem daunting, the process will be streamlined and much smoother with the help of a design professional. A design professional will create and plan a strategically designed kitchen, boosting efficiency and enhancing your daily cooking experience.

Here are some tips and guidelines I follow when transforming a kitchen:

1. Take Kitchen Cabinets Up to the Ceiling

There are a multitude of reasons to take the kitchen cabinets up to the ceiling. My top three are:

- Looks more up to date

- Makes the ceiling appear taller

- Adds more space for storage

2. Opt for Custom, Specialty Built-Ins

Custom built ins can accommodate your kitchen essentials. These are my top essential built ins:

- Pull out shelving for pantry items

- Trash and recycling bin cabinet storage

- Drawer designated for spices

- Sectioned drawer for knives

- Utensil drawer with dividers for large serving spoons, spatulas and tongs near stove

- Drawer for everyday cutlery

- Small appliance storage at waist height (coffee pot, mixer, crockpot, etc)

- Designated cabinet for Tupperware

- Pull out storage for pots and pans

- Cabinet for cutting boards, cookies sheets and trays

- Choose drawers for lower cabinets

BOUNUS: These storage options keeps clutter off the counters and work surface clean.

3. Add an Island with Storage

An Island can be a functional work space and also provide additional storage on all sides. Counter tops can be extended on one side for extra seating possibilities. Consider the height of the island, traffic pattern (while someone is walking through when you are standing at various work stations), and what activities are safe to preform while people may be sitting across from where you are cooking.

Bonus: Tip

Under the cabinet lighting and strategically placed electrical outlets can make a big difference in your at home cooking experience. Ample lighting makes reading labels and recipes easier, while outlets allow for small appliance use and charging.

Additional storage solutions will enhance the functionality of your kitchen and simplify your life leaving more time to enjoy who and what you love most.
